A good looking smile is enough to make anyone feel good. Unfortunately, some people aren't blessed with straight teethâ —but that doesn't mean it isn't possible to achieve. A gorgeous smile is just an orthodontist appointment away! Even better, you don't have to go through the dreaded "brace face" stage or forfeit food that you like.
With that said, if you're contemplating getting the Invisalign procedure, this guide will help. Keep reading to learn more about how to get a new set of teeth.
Invisalign is a cutting-edge technology designed to straighten teeth. For some people, metal braces are unattractive and difficult to maintain. However, clear aligners provide the same results without the wiring and additional maintenance. Not only are they less obvious than braces, but they're also custom-fitted to provide extra comfort.
Invisalign is a wonderful teeth-straightening option. But if you're unsure what to expect from the Invisalign process, here are some things to look forward to:
Invisalign Retainers Don't Need Many Appointments
Unlike traditional braces, an Invisalign retainer doesn't require as many appointments. Patients only need to go once a month to make sure everything is going well. If your trays don't require tightening, most appointments are short and sweet.
Invisalign Can Be Uncomfortable
It's normal for patients to have pain while going through the Invisalign process. When you first put your aligners in, they will pull your teeth to their new position. This can make your teeth feel a bit weak, which is normal. As you continue to wear your trays, the tenderness will recede.
Changes in Speech
Wearing Invisalign trays changes some patient's speech. The aligners are in your mouth all day, so naturally, it'll alter the way you talk. Some patients don't notice a change, while others adapt and learn to speak with them. If you don't talk normally after some time, speak to your orthodontist. It could be an indicator that your trays don't fit properly.
Eating with Invisalign
The good news about wearing Invisalign trays is that it doesn't have food restrictions. On the flip side, it can require that you take them out before eating. Removing them before a meal is a bit annoying, but it's better than not having what you want.
You'll Have to Continue to Wear an Invisalign Retainer
After treatment is done, you'll still have to wear an Invisalign retainer. It's called the refinement process. Continuing to wear trays will ensure that teeth stay straight and don't gradually go back to their previous position. It's expected that you wear them day and night for at least six months. After that time, they're only needed at night. The Invisalign procedure is quite simple, but there are some steps you'll have to go through to begin.
1. Your First Appointment
Before you start the Invisalign process, you must have your first appointment. This meeting allows you the chance to talk in-depth with the dentist and tell them how you want your teeth to look. They'll take an examination and determine if Invisalign is right for you. Unfortunately, this procedure isn't for everyone. If that's your situation, the dentist can provide additional options.
2. Molding Your Teeth
If Invisalign is a good fit for you, molding is next. This digital process ensures that your tray fits perfectly for your teeth and mouth. You'll get an x-ray, digital scan, and a photo to help achieve the best match. Once that's done, the results are sent off to the lab for tray customization.
3. Tray Fitting
Once your Invisalign trays come back, you're all set. The dentist will put them in to make sure they fit just right. If adjustments are necessary, the dentist might add in small attachments to help the aligners stay in place. But don't worry. The attachments are clear and only needed temporarily.
4. Routine Appointments
You'll need to have another appointment a few weeks after your initial fitting. The dentist will check to make sure your teeth are adjusting properly. If you have any questions or concerns, the first follow-up is the time to voice them. Other than that, you'll only have to go back periodically, but not too often. Appointments are only needed to check your progress or switch your aligners.
5. The Road to Straight Teeth
Invisalign results vary from person to person, but they work well. The time that it takes to complete treatment also differs, but the general timeframe is 6-12 months. However, it's important to follow the rules set by your dentist. Otherwise, you could hinder your results.
Aligners are required to be on at least 22 hours a day, even while you're sleeping! That means it needs lots of time on your teeth every day to work properly. If you leave them off for long periods, it will slow your progress. They should only come off when you're eating or brushing
Isn't it nice to know that you can have the smile you've always wanted? More importantly, you can do it without traditional braces. That's a win-win!
